Tranquil BBS2 – those PCI cards !

 

We have been asked to provide info on the SATA / RAID controllers used on the very popular BBS2

The BBS2 has 5 HDD bays.

The main board used has 2x SATA2 ports, from the Intel 945 chipset (non RAID)

The additional HDD bays are supported via an internal PCI card – there is a choice of two :

The default card used, the 3+1, provides 3x internal SATA channels + 1x eSATA (all can be part of a RAID array)

The optional card provides 4+0 ports, ie provides 4x internal SATA channels + 0x eSATA (all can be part of a RAID array)

 

ie if the default card is used, the system provides : 2x non RAID HDD ports (HDD1 and HDD2) + 3x RAID HDD ports (HDD3,4 and 5) + 1x eSATA port.

If the optional 4+0 card is used, the system provides : 1x non RAID HDD port (HDD1) + 4x RAID HDD ports (HDD2,3,4 and 5) + 0x eSATA port.

Raid5 SATA II ā€“ 3Gbps 4Ports (1External eSATA + 3 Internal) Low Profile PCI Host

    eSATA II ā€“ 3Gbps 4Ports with Raid5, Raid10, Raid0, Raid1, Port Multiplier and NCQ!

    RAID 5 (Distributed Parity RAID), JBOD (Just Bunch of Disks), RAID 0 (Striping), RAID 1 (Mirroring) and RAID 0+1 (mirrored-stripping) improve the data performance and provide the data redundancy and rebuilding.
